UI Designer

Job icon Job posting at Etsy on October 15, 2008

Etsy, the online marketplace for handmade items, seeks a full time UI designer to join our growing team.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

You will work closely with the product and engineering teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •      Layout and design of pages for new features on Etsy.
  •      Work with other teams at Etsy to turn prose ideas into product specs.
  •      Make complex things appear effortlessly simple.
  •      Keep a notebook of almost outlandish ideas with scrawlings that in your mind are finished designs.
  •      Create Product Requirement Documents, which is how the Product team communicates with Engineering.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  •      Illustrator & Photoshop knowledge: nothing too fancy, but you should be able to make full-page layouts.
  •      5+ years’ working as an HCI or UI/interaction design resource in a software product and/or web development environment required
  •      Know and love using a wiki to organize your ideas and communicate them to others.
  •      Basic HTML knowledge, enough to know what is an unrealistic layout for a Web page.
  •      A psychological understanding of the user experience. Web sites are at heart interactive applications that are supposed to have no learning for the user at all.
  •      Supreme patience.
  •      Comfortable in a dynamic working atmosphere.
  •      Excellent time-management skills
  •      Ability to learn as you go.
  •      Comfort with a fast-paced, always-on, highly ambiguous start-up environment.
  •      Proven track record with high standards of professionalism.
  •      Creative, resourceful, detail-oriented, highly organized.
  •      Ability to meet multiple objectives in an entrepreneurial environment with little supervision
  •      Self-motivated and highly trustworthy.
  •      Flexibility to work early or late hours as necessary.
  •      Teamwork skills essential; sense of humor required; overdeveloped egos must be checked at the door.

Desired:

  •      A strong appreciation for artisanal products and a DIY ethic.

Location: Brooklyn, NY
